Updates from the edge of reason... Wishing you all a very Happy Hallowe'een / All Souls Day!

Ahoy & Hello...

Those that have wandered this blog looking for recent playlists..
We must apologize.

We started this blog with one intention and focus, and then it evolved upon demand to another.. which became playlists since the boys over in Strombo land weren't posting them for quite some time! However, we have linked to several recent ones missing from here, that the Strombo crew has managed to get up in other locations.. and will work on filling out those gaps, as well as retro ones over the next while..

[ ~~~~
UPDATE: November 7, 2010; 11:50pm

Are you looking for the October 31st, 2010 Strombo Show playlist?!

Find it over at the George Stroumboulopoulos Facebook Page: STROMBO SHOW – HALLOWEEN EDITION: OCT 31ST, 2010!.
FYI. You may have to log in or like the page in order to view content.

And a really quick "Happy One YEAR Anniversary on CBC Radio 2" shout-out here (more to come on that) to the Strombo Show...

George, Darby, Mike, Alex, Bob, Rich, and all the guests (especially G's Mom!).. you make our Sunday nights very special!

Thank-you! And thank-you to CBC Radio 2 for taking the Strombo Show on. We ♥ you!

~~~~]
They have sorta been putting some stuff up over at http://www.cbc.ca/strombo... we know.. just look for the white shirt. It still freaks us out a bit.. this picture here isn't so bad.. but the promo shots they took for the website & other advertising.. Wow. All we gotta say.. is what's with the Jersey Shore tan (and we don't even know what Jersey Shore is.. but we know that it is bad ;)
And some stuff is going up at the George Stroumboulopoulos Facebook Page!. It is hard to find things on both, as the information gets lost in the flow of information.
See below for more details and playlist links.
We last posted on September 19, 2010 as that was the return of the show for the fall season. There were all sorts of developments seeming to be happening in the web world of Strombo and we were happy to see a playlist post go up over there for the following week of Sept 26th.
The link to that post is below.. it takes some effort to find it over at their website as it is buried deep in an "on-going stream of consciousness" or whatever that means... we hunted the archives for you..
Over at http://www.cbc.ca/strombo: September 26, 2010 playlist
They then didn't post ANY playlists or updates all of sudden, so that threw me for a loop, as we were expecting them to be handling that again. Sigh. Apparently they are finishing the Strombo Show website for the radio part for early November. We'll just reserve judgement on that, as we'll wait until we see it.
< Rant On >
At present we're not really able to access the player that they have in any web browser we've tested. Well.. it seems to work for ~5mins then cop-out. We've tried Google Chrome, Internet Explorer (which is the ONLY one we can/must use for Radio 2's player) and Apple Safari.
Can we just state again here.. FLASH SUCKS->DON'T USE IT!
Find an all platform, all browser, web friendly, smart phone adaptable solution.
Please. Thanks!
< Rant Off / >
The next playlist that was made available is posted up over at the George Stroumboulopoulos Facebook page in a note format:
Playlist for Sunday, October 24, 2010.
[ Oh.. And thanks so much for forgetting my birthday G.
You owe me a request.. or three I think. ]
And we still have requests from people to post our playlists and updates as they like the extra info, links, goodies and details. We will do my best to get those up over time. We just haven't been able to do them on a weekly basis anymore, as our schedule at present doesn't permit it.
The playlists take a great of effort, time and attention on my part and we're a bit of  perfectionists about writing, so we'd rather not do one than do a post half-assed.. although this post here is going to be a bit of that, simply due to time and the need to get something up here to address questions, etc..
We will update it a bit more soon with some more information on how the chats will be handled for November as we're going to be quite busy, and also some plans for December if we manage to email the Strombo crew and maybe get an answer back..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks for your patience as always as we get the information, lists, etc.. up!
And for reading. Enjoy!

And please contribute if you have questions, comments, feedback, links, band or song info, etc.. Please comment on the blog.. it's nice to know you are out there enjoying the music, the show, the chats, and the info above as much as I am. Thanks!

Yours in musical awesome-ness,

[ UPDATE: Sept 21, 2010; 2:23am:
G12 Count Down's status is still the same.. up, with a few missing tracks.

But.. the Polaris Music Prize Playlist from Sunday night's show is up.. no interview summary or deets yet, but we wanted to get the songs up while we could still type... barely. ]

HERE WE GO...

We were able to tag or note *MOST* of the tracks while listening to the show on Sunday, Sept 19, 2010.

We did listen 2x, but the chat was busy, busy in AST/EST timezones and it was a hectic night w/our first real chat back in ~2 months.. and we are still missing about 7-8 of our regulars.. but had ~7-8 people hanging out chatting about the show!

We managed to record most of the songs in the PST timezone listen.. as the chat was really quiet then. So there will be as full & a complete list as we can rustle it up.. as in.. as soon as we can get it finished in the next couple days!

G12 Count Down is up & as close to complete as we could manage. The full playlist is still to come!

All tracks played on the show are in: Blue and Bold!
So they are easy to view/find/read on the page with all the other notes. Hope that helps! Feedback welcome!

Any Errors and/or Omissions are totally my fault!
IF.. you have any corrections or info that we're missing, please leave a comment on the blog (below), or ping me & we'll update the blog list!

Thanks. Enjoy.

[ AND.. as always.. Feedback, comments, notes, etc are ALWAYS welcome!

[ Also, we keep evolving this layout each week (but working on a template/regular format to stick with & make life easier & to get the playlist up sooner!)..
So if you have any suggestions/ideas, please let us know by commenting somewhere on the blog. ]

The G12 is.. 12-1 like it is on the show (and in the full playlist) so it in the proper order of things. So far.. no one has complained, so we're going with it.

G12 Count Down ~ Sept 19, 2010
[ My NOTEs in italics AND square [ ] brackets (usually) ]

[ UPDATE (Sept 20, 2010): As mentioned above confirmation of the G12 is pending!

We put a "?" question mark in front of the G12 until we confirm those tracks.

Last time we saw a G12 was the June 6th, 2010 show.. We believe.. So we put those as the "last weeks" G12 list and the prior week (May 30, 2010) as well.. since it was there and it has been THAT long! ]

[ Thanks to @wildworks, @ragzey_z, @Huskermould, @Barb_Wheeler.. and a few others we've missed b/c it's early in the AM.. (Sorry.. we'll complete the list later!) They were hanging out in the Skype chat on Sunday night at various times & helped me in catching the songs, band names & info! You guys & gals rock! ]

[ START of the G12 ]

?G12 - #12: Pulled Apart By Horses - High Five, Swan Dive, Nose Dive

Last week (June 6th, 2010) #12: Zeus - At The Risk Of Repeating
Prior week (May 30, 2010) #12: Kings Go Forth - I Don't Love You No More

[ What the wikipedia has to say about Pulled Apart By Horses.
First off they are an English band... Which is almost always a receipe for awesome right there..

But here is the Pulled Apart By Horses mySpace page.. so you can have a listen to some other tracks & decide for yourself! Sadly it appears they are only snippets of the songs so you don't get the full experience :( ]

?G12 - #11: M.I.A. - It Takes A Muscle

Last week (June 6th, 2010) #11: Club 8 - Western Hospitality
Prior week (May 30, 2010) #11: Voyager One – 1,000 Miles, 1,000 Deaths

[ Wow. You should have heard/see/read the total up-roar in
The Strombo Show Chat Skype "chat-room" once we all realized that we in the midst of the G12 and the jingles that intro each G12 song were missing in action!
Aside from 1 vote not liking them.. everyone else was pretty sad :(((

As well.. you can't tell what song is what.. AND it adds something so VERY unique to the show.. that NO other countdowns do!
It's one of the reasons we personally *LOVE* the show.. it's about more than music, it's snippets of culture.. (from our "vintage" if we may borrow that phrase from George)
#BringBackTheCount! I/We ♥ it! ]

?G12 - #10: Homeboy Sandman - The Carpenter*

Last week (June 6th, 2010) #10: Gabriel Mintz - Desert Sky
Prior week (May 30, 2010) #10: Ten Bears - Braces

[ * we didn't personally catch the name/track here at all.. So we're not 100% we have the correct track. Thanks to @huskermould tho for help with this one.

And.. can't say we actually know really what AutoTune is (but that appears to be a good thing to be ignorant of from what we keep hearing..) We're pretty sure we haven't listened to any songs made/that use it.. that we are presently aware of.. ]

?G12 - #9: G9: Arcade Fire - Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)

Last week (June 6th, 2010) #9: Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Prior week (May 30, 2010) #9: Band of Horses - Dilly

[ This is a new-ish "Arcade Fire" song... more deets to come..
We just can't recall anything else right now. ]

?G12 - #8: G8: Brendan Flowers - Only The Young

Last week (June 6th, 2010) #8: Drake (Feat. Lil' Wayne) - Miss Me
Prior week (May 30, 2010) #8: Broken Social Scene - Texaco Bitches

[ This is off the solo album by Brendan Flowers lead singer of The Killers. Sounds like it could be a Killer's song for sure to me!

Interesting Personal Note: The Killers were the band that helped one of our collective find "indie" music again in way..

"I remember listening to to the radio one fine day in the summer o'2004 as I was driving up the #2 Highway in Alberta.. heading from Edmonton to Calgary (a drive I used to make ~1x/month when I lived there).. and "Mr. Brightside" came on the radio.. and it blew my mind!

I wasn't sure what it was.. but as a dancer it spoke to me so deeply. And I also sat there convinced that it was some 80's-90's alternative band that I somehow just missed knowing about back then. I hadn't bought a CD in ages, but I promotely found the 1st record store I could (in my old stomping grounds in Calgary and picked up HOT FUSS (Wikipedia Link) so freaking fast your head would spin..

And years later when I moved to Vancouver & first learnt to spin fire.. it was one of their songs.. "Human" that was the first song that really allowed me to understand what I loved about fire spinning so much!

I *heart* The Killers.. Human! ]

[ Still in the middle o'G12 here: ]

?G12 - #7: Kings Of Leon - Radioactive

Last week (June 6th, 2010) #7: Megafaun - Volunteers
Prior week (May 30, 2010) #7: Zeus – (The) Renegade

[ New Album.. oh the pressure as G said! ]

?G12 - #6: Tokyo Police Club - Boots Of Danger (Wait Up)

Last week (June 6th, 2010) #6: Ten Bears - Braces
Prior week (May 30, 2010) #6: Gord Downie - The Hard Canadian

[ So.. IN case you've been under a rock for ~the last month or so.. you'll have heard that the show formally know as The Hour has transformed into George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight.

And yes.. George mentioned all the jokes here.

Well the obvious ones.. Haha.. GST.. HST.. etc. (Nice. More on this later..) we got the sense that he would prefer people call it GS Tonight for short. We're torn.. it's not an hour anymore.. but it's going to take some time for these long time fans to adjust here to not calling it The Hour.

We personally thinking they should have gone w/Strombo Tonight (TV) to match/pair up with The Strombo Show (radio)... that would have been better branding IMHO. But then again.. no one asked us.

More details to come.. but for now..

New ways on *How to contact G*!

(Hint look for the "white".. we know.. WTF?!)

New Website.. http://www.cbc.ca/strombo
The old Strombo Show Website Strombo.com re-directs to there now. With a new streamlined look.. it integrates:
1. The (old) Hour site into the new
George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight,
2. The (old) Strombo Show site into well.. still The Strombo Show
3. (along with The Hour..) I mean..,
George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight's YouTube Channel (last we checked it still said The Hour on there ;),
4. High-lites from G's Twitter feed, other Social Media links (Facebook only for now), & other goodies to come..

AND.. we have a gut instinct they are working on an iPhone/iPad/other mobile phone app? Maybe..
Now.. we don't know this for sure, BUT.. if anyone asks..
You heard/read it here FIRST!

(But we hope they keep the content on the old Strombo Show Facebook page somehow ~link to come to refresh your memories)..
SO MUCH GOOD INFO there!)

4. Songs that make you think of your ex.. (uh oh.. this outta be interesting)
5. Songs that represent "the wild card".. and explore, or inspire you to learn on the journey o'life!

G suggested.. a #6: songs that keep you awake & Bob merged that in w/songs that make you speed...

Last week (June 6th, 2010) #4: Woods - Blood Dries Darker

[ END of the G12 ]

[ NOTE: That's the best we've got ATM on the missing tracks. Please comment if you have anything we've missed! TIA.

We'll have a chance hopefully sometime in the next few days to have a go @ figuring out the missing tracks to get the rest of the correct info up.

Unless "The mother ship".. we mean..
The *NEW* Integrated Strombo Website has posted the full playlist, so we can confirmed what we are missing from them
(only ~3-4 songs from the G12 list actually... so not too bad, if we might say so)! ]

[ Ten o'Clock (I mean 9:37pm) w/Tom:
Tom Waits - Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets To The Wind In Copenhagen)
Well.. Sigh.. that was so nice.. ok.. We've possibly recovered from Beyonce finally now..

We'll explain later if you missed that part of the show. We *wish* we were joking here. But Beyonce WAS played on the Strombo Show. More on that later.. in the Highlights & Excerpts section to come, as we have LOTS to say on this.. lots o'interesting stuff ;)

Anyway.. back to Ten o'Clock w/Tom.
Some notes from the chat.. Someone mentioned that their MOM LOVES TOM since listening to him on the Strombo Show & had to buy two CDS for her of Tom songs! How awesome is that!? ]

Happy Birthday George...

A GREAT BIG Strombo Show Chat Happy Birthday to George..

Now.. we had a great card.. but couldn't get it scanned to get up here.. We'll save it for next year we guess.. so this download-able and color-able pirate flag seemed just the thing instead. And just a note.. we found some wicked Halloween stuff for you for this year while searching...
We'll save that for October & one of our key collective's birthday's!

So... Yes it is a bit belated getting up.. and we back-dated this post
(to 8/16/10; 8:16am.. as no idea what time George was born.. likely not this early.. but it seemed nice to reflect the date & time thing).

We were unfortunately dealing with some "issues", but we'll address that in a different post.. we choose to not really post or deal with any of that nastiness today out of respect for G's & his b-day.. (However.. it will be dealt with at a later date and post!)

Needless to say some things prevented us from posting this sooner.. (which is no doubt the kind of disruption intended by this person/persons...)

Anyway.. this is about George and his day..

IN case you aren't aware.. George was born on a fine August day..
(or we're assuming it was) 38 years ago (no old man jokes now.. except those us older or born in the same year.. it's special exemption)..

That was August 16, 1972 to be exact... a Wednesday if those "day you were born" calculators are correct.

We think we can skip the reference to the "Monday's Child poem" here... as Wednesday was apparently NOT a good day. We think however, George has managed to get over it.. ;)

He clearly does have his Wednesday Addams kinda days/influences/something going on there though..

SO... maybe *this* explains ALL the black?!

Ok.. back to the story.. we can't say much more as we weren't there..
BUT what we do know... we mostly read on George's Wikipedia.. as can you..

The highlights tho... his Mom - Mary.. is well.. awesome.. as aside from the whole giving birth part... the woman picks some pretty incredible music when she makes a guest appearance on the show. You can see the dates George called her for requests under the "George's Mom" tag in the labels list above!

So.. we know that Mary is.. (was) a nurse, I think that's what G said one time on The Hour... and she's Ukrainian. Little is known about George's Dad... except that he left when George was young.. we think we recall ~7-ish (don't quote us on that, we have no idea where we heard that or why that #'s in our head), but what we do know is that of course G's Dad is Greek.. giving us this wonderful, somewhat unpronounceable, a joy to spell (except backwards.. we'll explain this later as we're too tired to find the link), more vowels in one place than you can possibly imagine... last name.. the infamous.. Stroumboulopoulos!

We spelt that right.. right? we spell it so often on this blog, etc.. that sometimes we start to second guess ourselves.

That is actually George Mark Paul Stroumboulopoulos to be precise.

Holy middle names Batman. Like his name wasn't long enough to begin with.. wow. Impressive.

And his initials.. GMPS seem to stand for absolutely nothing in most abbreviations/acronym finders.. but... if you're up on your Organic Chemistry/Enzymology/Neurochemistry.. you might find this an interesting read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMP_synthase

So according to the wonderful & lovely Wikipedia, George was born in Malton, Ontario (Canada, Earth.. Not Middle Earth.. Just Earth. In case you need to get really specific) AND... he grew up there. Other bits & pieces we've gleaned over the years from comments he's made on the show. It seems he went to some sort of religious school.. We're guessing for most of his elementary & junior high years.. no clue on the whole high school experience.. he rares seems to mention it. Probably b/c like most of us, high school is better left alone & forgotten...

Wikipedia skips straight over all that.. and lands us in 2000 with George at the ripe age of 28.. 10 yrs ago to be exact.. where his days at MuchMusic started. We must admit.. we don't recall much (haha.. pun intended ;) of George from that time. Most of our collective didn't watch a ton of Much back then..

But the lovely George clearly had a love of the music as various incarnations of The Strombo Show (link to Strombo.com) have been around for quite some time...

As we know.. "The show moved to CBC Radio 2 on November 8, 2009." And lead down a long and winding path that even contributed to the eventual creation of this blog.. but that is for another story, another day. The writing of the history of the Strombo Show Chat is in progress.. as we speak to old fans (and perhaps even George or the show producers one day) about the origins, the path, the growth, and the wonder of The Strombo Show.. and it's kinda cute & adorable host.. Mr. Strombo.

Hope you've enjoyed the story.. perhaps even some of it is true. Well.. the Happy Birthday part is for sure!

From all your faithful fans and followers over here at the Strombo Show Chat (& Blog).. We are wishing you a wonderful, special, enjoyable, healthy, and everything you could ever wish for HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Keep rocking it.. and we know we'll keep enjoying it!
All the best!

August 1, 2010: The Strombo Show Playlist - "Best of Strombo Show" Summer Repeats -> June 13, 2010

August 1, 2010: The Strombo Show is in the "Best of the Strombo Show" Summer Repeats!

This weeks show was a repeat of the June 13, 2010 Strombo Show.. and thankfully we have a partial playlist up over here:
June 13, 2010: The Strombo Show Playlist - Top Front People Part 1 (NOTE: No G12 Count Down this week!)

There was no G12 Count Down this week, or as a part of the repeat/original show.. (if you're looking for one.)

[ UPDATE: August 1, 2010; 1:06 am:

Happy August Long Weekend.. OR whatever is being celebrated in your province.. basically "Province Day".. it's BC Day out here.. Heritage Day in AB, and Civic Holiday/other weird ones/names depending on your province.

When this episode first aired we did manage to get some of the playlist from June 13th up.. we meant to come back later & flesh things out a bit later more w/additional links, commentary & pics, etc.. and got distracted w/summer & the show heading into repeats.. so will get those updates & missing tracks up over at the original playlist posting page: June 13, 2010: The Strombo Show Playlist - Top Front People Part 1

But we wanted to at least get something up here & a quick "place-holder post (with some deets) while working on finishing that up!

As well, there was no chat.. actually there hasn't been a chat since the "Best of the Strombo Show" Summer Repeat Shows started..

July 4th was our last chat, but as soon as we see a new show here, the chat will return.. hopefully with a tweet-up/chat combo party before summer ends out here in Vancouver. We are working on some back-dated posts for the July shows... with info on what repeats aired where.. Really :) ]

We were able to tag or note pretty much *ALL* of the tracks while listening to the show on Sunday, June 27th.. yes.. a geeky 2x. There are perks to PST ;)

The show was a little bit different again this week, as it was a re-hash/re-mix of two interviews/show take-overs that George had "bands" do in the past ~2 months.

We had Gord Downie return to the show, as well as the illustrious Band of Horses (wow.. the chat was crazy that night I tell you)!

The Gord Downie interview segment originally aired on May 23rd.. and as you *may* note.. that is one of the rare missing playlists that we haven't put up yet.

Reason being.. that was the week that George and The Hour were out here in Vancouver, and so.. we were a bit (ok MEGA) distracted and all and didn't have any time to do it. We hope/guess we'll get that segment down at least this time for this playlist and we'll back-track later & finish up the May 23rd one sometime soon(-ish).

The other interview that was featured on Sunday, June 27.. on our "end of season" and highlights show we guess you could call it.. was Band of Horses.

Now Band of Horses stopped by back on May 16, 2010... which wasn't ALL that long ago, but it was an enjoyable 'lil' interview/chat. AND.. good news, that playlist is up over here at: May 16, 2010: The Strombo Show Playlist (& G12 Count Down), so since we'll be stealing from ourselves to port it on over here.. hence, what we tried to get up first was some of the other tracks played this past Sunday.. since you can go look there for their segment. Sound like a plan?

And also.. keep in mind.. there was NO G12 Count Down again this night!

We had sorta thought we heard (we being us & the Strombo Show Chat Crew) that it was going to return this week.. but instead it appears that this show may have been the last of the few blood for a while.

We know.. we know.. we're in new music withdrawal too.. guess we have to find some time to #tapAvein & go read some new music blogs.. we'll see what we can post here if we are into repeats, as we might be able to get some old... OLD.. playlists up.. *gasp* and well.. go to the beach on Sunday afternoons instead of hosting the chat! Novel idea.. huh! (Thanks George.. that's really sweet of you to think of that... haha.)

We're still going to see if we can get some sneak peeks or hints for us.. but we have to find some time to email the boys.. and then.. they actually have to email us back.. oh wait.. sorry.. we're laughing.. LAUGHING as that is not likely.. Darby, George.. bucky.. how about it eh? ;)

So, as we mentioned..the show on Sunday, June 27, 2010 was a montage of interviews, some new stuff, but also.. NO Bob or Rich... But we did see a bell chime at the Ten o'Clock Hour with Mr. Tom Waits.. and a few tracks that used to be in the G12 were floating around in the playlist.

[ As for the rest of the updates... stay tuned...

We may still do a "Highlights & Excerpts section" but will see how it goes w/all the repeat-ish stuff in here. ]

All tracks played on the show are in: Blue and Bold!
So they are easy to view/find/read on the page with all the other notes. Hope that helps! Feedback welcome!

Any Errors and/or Omissions are totally our fault!
IF.. you have any corrections or info that we're missing, please comment or ping me & we'll update the blog list!
Thanks.
Enjoy.

AND.. as always.. Feedback, comments, notes, etc are ALWAYS welcome!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*** And please note.. while there has been a few mini-updates posted over at The Strombo Show Website.... but George is now down in LA (or as we call it Lala-land) on vacation and apparently working on some other "projects".
Darby the main producer/God (or at least we think he is.. the main producer of the Strombo Show.. not God.. yeesh.) for the Strombo Show is also off & away for the summer, so we're guessing it's unlikely that they'll get much in the way of updates etc, while the boyz are on "summer break"!
And it doesn't look like they took us up on our offer to update if for them if they like maybe gave us the passwords & FTP access to the site(s) & oh PAY us.. LOL.
Ha.. ya right eh?!
Hmmmm.. here's a theory.. it could be why those shows aren't up on the website.. as we'll be hearing them again. Crossing our fingers that they do get up after a round two showing tho, as there are a few shows in our lovin' it list.
If we get around to it and have some time we may also get some other goodies up here other than playlists for y'all.. but you have to be really nice to us and like feed us cookies and things if you want that ;)
So.. we "may" share some tidbits from George's road-trip later if we find time to put together another post in the next few weeks.. but you can always check out his Twitter (see the sidebar here for a block w/his Twitter updates) & TweetPhotos, etc.. as we would just steal stuff (with credit of course) from there anyway.
[ We keep evolving this layout each week (but creating a template/regular format to stick with & make our lives easier & to get the playlist up sooner is hard when George keeps changing the freaking show format on us!)..
Of course, as mentioned above, this week is unique in that there isn't a G12, and no Bob OR Rich from CBC Radio 2!
If you have any suggestions/ideas, please let us know by commenting here, or somewhere on the blog. ]
